Ned Hyland was selected for the Kent Clapp CEO Leadership Award for initiating and growing the Miracle Fund, in memory of his wife, Diana, which supports advanced breast cancer research at University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center. Medical Director Julian Kim, M.D. presented the award to Ned along with Medical Mutual Chief Marketing & Communications Officer and Executive Vice President of Corporate Communications and Sales & Customer Relations Jared Chaney, who made a special announcement that Medical Mutual will donate $10,000 to the Miracle Fund as part of the Pillar Award recognition.

The Smart Business story reads as follows:

Philanthropy is a big part of Ned Hyland’s life, and that passion has been extended to his work at Todd Associates Inc., where he serves as president and shareholder. But there is one cause that stands out above the rest for Hyland and his family.

In 2008, the Diana Hyland Miracle Fund was established in memory of Hyland’s wife, Diana, who lost her battle with the devastating disease of metastatic breast cancer in October 2008. Diana and Ned co-founded the fund when Diana became very ill. She knew it would not benefit her personally, but her vision was to create a fund that would help others afflicted with advanced breast cancer.

The Miracle Fund’s mission is to further research for advanced breast cancer by focusing on new theories, trials and treatments aimed at managing the cancer and extending lives. Every dollar raised does directly to University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center. What makes the Miracle Fund unique is that it is one of the first funds to focus solely on advanced breast cancer. As a result of the fund’s efforts, internationally recognized authorities on breast cancer treatment and research are being recruited to Seidman Cancer Center.

Since its inception, Ned has led the grass-roots committee of family and friends to host seven annual gala fundraisers at Shaker Heights Country Club, as well as numerous golf outings to support the fund. He has successfully recruited other families and individuals afflicted by advanced breast cancer to become involved and financially support the fund.

Congratulations to Ned and the entire Todd Associates team on this special honor!

PACE Act Passes House, Senate, Offers Relief to Many Employers

Posted on: October 8th, 2015 by todd-admin No Comments

The following is an update on the PACE Act. Paul Nachtwey, Todd Associates’ Vice President, Employee Benefits, says, “The PACE Act is important because it insulates  mid-size firms indefinitely from ObamaCare community rating requirements. Without this relief, employers with 51-99 employees would face staggering rate increases. Perhaps less obvious, this legislation is further evidence that ObamaCare continues to unravel.”

The U.S. Senate, following the House of Representatives, has passed House Resolution 1624, the “Protecting Affordable Coverage for Employees Act” or “PACE Act” which will be sent to President Obama’s desk for signature. It is anticipated the President will sign the Act into law.

The PACE Act would amend the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) and would redefine small employers as those with 50 or fewer employees and would give states the option to expand the definition to include employers with up to 100 employees (or, practically speaking, those with 51 to 100 employees, also called “mid-size employers”). Currently all states define small employers as those with 1 to 50 or 2 to 50 employees, however many have already defined the group size up to 100 employees beginning in 2016. Employers should check their state statutes to determine the group size in place for January 2016.

If the PACE Act is not signed into law, beginning January 2016, the definition of small employer will change from groups of up to 50 to include groups of up to 100 employees. This could have a negative impact on mid-size employers, and they may face higher premium costs.

If the PACE Act is signed into law, it’s important to note that mid-size employers will not be subject to modified community rating rules beginning in 2016, unless their state chooses to define small employers as those with 100 or more employees.

Community rating, which affects the small group and individual market, is a policy by which personal factors used by an insurer to determine premium rates are very limited in scope. Instead, insurers follow instructions from the federal government on age curves, geographical rating, and state reporting to determine premiums.

Todd Associates supports Rhonda’s Kiss

Rhonda’s Kiss, a fundraising event recently hosted by Marc A. Stefanski and his children, and named for the Third Federal Chairman’s late wife, Rhonda, who lost her battle with pancreatic cancer in late 2014,  raised  $600,000 to help Cleveland residents with cancer who are unable to afford treatment and support. The July 10 event was attended by nearly 500 corporate, civic, healthcare and community leaders. Todd Associates was pleased to support the event as a main sponsor.

Through The Marc A. and Rhonda L. Stefanski Foundation and in partnership with The Cleveland Clinic’s Community Outreach Program, proceeds from Rhonda’s Kiss will provide financial support to increase cancer screenings in urban communities, and to assist patients diagnosed with cancer who are in financial need, by using a three-pronged approach, integrating outreach (education, awareness and screening), navigation (medical and home) and patient services (treatment and financial assistance and emotional support).

“The event was such an inspiring and fitting tribute to Rhonda’s memory and legacy,” said Marc A. Stefanski. “It was also a night of healing for my children and me, enabling us to move forward as a family while never forgetting what Rhonda meant to us.

“We are thrilled to have raised so much money in our first year – funds that will directly benefit cancer patients who need it most. I am grateful to everyone who donated to such a worthy cause, and also made it such a fun and memorable evening.”

The donation will be administered through Cleveland Clinic’s Taussig Cancer Institute, which will screen patients’ requests for non-medical funding needs. The Clinic will handle requests for funds and evaluate needs through its Community Outreach Program.
